How We Finally Fixed AHN Saint Vincent’s Sterile Storage Floor
For years, the sterile storage room in AHN Saint Vincent’s Central Processing Department had been a constant battle. The floor failed repeatedly despite three separate attempts by out-of-town contractors. The real culprit was relentless moisture vapor rising from the 150-year-old hospital basement slab, which caused every previous system to delaminate and fail.
We knew this job would require a much more aggressive approach. We started with a heavy mechanical grind to create the proper Concrete Surface Profile (CSP), giving the new flooring system maximum mechanical adhesion. Once the surface was thoroughly prepared, we installed Sherwin-Williams Poly-Crete MD, a high-performance urethane cement system specifically designed for extreme moisture conditions. This system handles up to 99% relative humidity, delivering complete vapor mitigation from below and a rock-solid barrier from above.
Working alongside Sam Melaragno to handle logistics and build out the ICRA protocols was an absolute blessing. His coordination kept the project running smoothly while maintaining the highest standards of infection control in this critical sterile environment. To match AHN’s branding, we incorporated custom broadcast flakes in their signature colors for a clean, professional appearance. We then locked everything in with a 100% solids antimicrobial epoxy grout coat, followed by an aluminum oxide-filled urethane topcoat. The finished floor offers exceptional durability, outstanding chemical resistance, and easy cleaning — all essential for a sterile healthcare environment.
The result speaks for itself: a floor that finally holds strong, allowing the unit to return to service quickly and ending the costly cycle of repeated failures. When other contractors couldn’t solve the problem, our team delivered a lasting solution through serious preparation and the right moisture-mitigation system.
