Cool Feel / Heat-Reflective Pool Deck Coatings

Cool Feel (and similar "cool deck" or heat-reflective coatings) are water-based, acrylic, solid-color or tinted hi-build coatings designed specifically for exterior concrete, such as pool decks, patios, lanais, walkways, and other sun-exposed surfaces.

• How it works: The formula includes Comfort Step Technology™ (or equivalent microspheres/infrared-reflective pigments) that reflect and dissipate UV/heat rays, reducing surface temperatures by an average of 20°F (or up to 30–38°F in some systems/tests) compared to bare concrete. It's applied in 1–2 coats over properly prepared concrete (cleaned, etched if needed), self-crosslinks for durability, and resists pool chemicals, stains, UV fading, and household spills.

• How it works:
• Acid staining — A chemical reaction (metallic salts in acid) penetrates and etches the concrete for mottled, marbled earth tones (permanent color). Applied after light prep/etching, neutralized, and sealed.
• Water-based stains — Pigmented acrylics provide solid or semi-transparent color with easier application and cleanup; often used for uniform or subtle tones.
• Both require proper surface prep (cleaning, light etching/grinding) and a final sealer for protection and gloss/slip resistance.
• Benefits: Creates beautiful, custom designs (natural veining, highlights, or bold accents); is durable outdoors; adds visual interest without hiding the concrete's character.

Easier, Safer Cleaning: Phosphoric Acid Preferred

One big advantage of our pool deck treatments (Cool Feel coatings, stained/sealed concrete) is simplified maintenance. Unlike bare or poorly sealed concrete that may require aggressive muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) for deep cleaning or etching—which can be hazardous, fume-heavy, and damaging if overused—we recommend phosphoric acid-based cleaners.

• Why phosphoric acid? It's milder, less corrosive to the concrete/sealer, produces fewer fumes, and effectively removes mineral deposits, efflorescence, calcium buildup, stains, or light dirt without etching away the surface or risking damage to the coating/stain. It's safer for users and the environment while still delivering great results.
• How we use it: Diluted phosphoric acid cleaners (or products formulated with it) for routine or spot cleaning—followed by rinse and neutralizer if needed. No need for harsh acids that could compromise the finish or create hazards.
